About Japan Tax Calculator
Japan Tax Calculator is a small, independent project with one goal: make Japanese taxes and visas understandable for the people who actually have to deal with them, foreign residents and freelancers. No logins, no fluff, no selling your data.
Who makes it #
Jordy Meow has lived in Japan since 2008. He's a software developer and runs Meow Apps, ikuzo, Ikitorii and Offbeat Japan (also in French as Japon Secret). He built the calculator and writes the guides, drawing on fifteen-plus years of doing his own Japanese paperwork, filing, and visa renewals the hard way.
Emi is an accountant based in Japan who specialises in helping foreign residents with their taxes. She reviews the tax figures and explanations on this site for accuracy, so the numbers reflect how things actually work, not a rough translation of a translation.
Between them: an engineer who has navigated life in Japan for over a decade, and a professional who guides foreigners through Japanese tax for a living.
How we keep it accurate #
- Primary sources only. Figures come from the National Tax Agency (NTA), the Immigration Services Agency, and the Japan Pension Service, and we link to them so you can check.
- Reviewed for the current year. The calculator and guides are kept current for the 2026 (FY2026) tax year, rates, deductions, the national pension amount, and the 2025–2026 visa reforms.
- Honest about change. Tax and immigration rules change often. When something is a proposal rather than law, we say so.
Important, this is information, not advice #
Everything here gives estimates and general information, not personalised tax, legal or immigration advice. Your own situation, your visa, your dependants, your home country's tax treaty, can change the answer. For decisions that matter, talk to a professional. Emi's firm, Emi Consulting, helps foreign residents directly.
